Desert Stormtroopers, better known as Sandtroopers, were units of Imperial Stormtrooper that specialized in operating on planets with vast desert environments. They were utilized by the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War to aid in combating the rebel threat on desert planets, most notably on Tatooine just before the Battle of Yavin.

History Edit

Formation Edit

Desert Stormtroopers were integrated into the Imperial Army at some point after the reorganization[1] of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire as an special infantry unit to be specifically utilized in desert environments.

Like most other Stormtroopers in the Imperial Army, Sandtroopers were trained to use several different types of weapons, such as E-11 blasters and T-21 light repeating blasters, and were also trained to learn the essentials of surviving in a desert. Some Sandtroopers were trained to tame dewbacks[2], a large native species of reptile from the planet Tatooine.

Galactic Civil War Edit

Like most environmental specific stormtroopers, Sandtroopers saw limited use during the Galactic Civil War. Due to being trained to fight exclusively on desert planets, Sandtroopers only fought in a few select battles during the war, such as the Battle of Tatooine[3].

Some Sandtroopers that proved themselves in the heat of battle were enlisted to join the elite Death Squadron, Darth Vader's personal military force[4]. One such platoon of Sandtroopers, known as Desert Sands, was sent by Vader to hunt for the Death Star plans on the planet Tatooine just shortly before the start of the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY[5].

Several years later, in 8 ABY, a small legion of Sandtroopers was used by Grand Admiral Thrawn during his war against the New Republic[6]. This legion was notably used by Thrawn to capture a moss painting known as the Killik Twilight, an Alderaan painting that held a rebel-created Shadowcast key code inside it[7].
